Renfrew County crop farmer and frequent Ottawa Farm Show hay champion Maynard van der Galien has finished in 1st place in 10 categories at the Renfrew Fair, including hay, potatoes and whole bread.
The indefatigable van der Galien has been a fair competitor for years. Here is a list of the categories he won: First cut hay (alfalfa 85%, or more alfalfa), first cut hay (legume other than alfalfa, at least 85%), first cut hay (grass, 85% grass or more), Second cut hay (legume, 85% legume or more), second cut hay (grass and legume mixture, at least 30% grass or legume), corn (eight cobs, hybrid NK), yellow potatoes (he entered Yukon golds), Red potatoes (he entered Pontiac reds), whole wheat bread, and other yeast bread (he entered light rye).
