Although it is still early, it appears as if Ontario farmers won’t be planting as much winter wheat as they have in the past couple of years.
Ontario farmers planted 919,000 acres of winter wheat in 2018 and 920,000 acres in 2017, both down from 975,000 acres in 2016. This year will probably be less than 900,000, said OMAFRA’s Joanna Follings.
While many farmers have been able to get into the fields early to plant winter wheat on corn and soybean acres that were left unplanted this past spring, the rest of the planting will be delayed as corn, soybeans and edible beans are behind normal harvest schedule.
