Eastern Ontarios top crops beat provincial yield average
OTTAWA Statistics Canada says soybean growers in Eastern Ontario last year suffered their worst yields in six years, but Eastern Ontario yields beat the provincial average for all three main cash crops. The StatCan report, released Feb. 12, says soybean yields in Eastern Ontario averaged 45.5 bushels per acre in 2014, down slightly from 45.9 bu/ac in 2013. The provincial average last year was 40.6 bu/ac. Corn yields in Eastern Ontario averaged 160.9 bu/ac, up 0.4 bu/ac over 2013 and the highest yield since 2010 when Eastern Ontario producers averaged 163.9 bu/ac. The average provincial corn yield last year was 151.3 bu/ac. Wheat yields in this end of the province were also down slightly at 75.4 bu/ac last year. The 2013 yield saw 78.1 bu/ac. The average provincial yield last year was 62.1 bu/ac. |
