HURON EAST — An allegedly impaired driver was arrested after ditching a pickup truck and then fleeing in a farm tractor.
The circumstances unfolded Jan. 22, shortly before midnight, when Huron County OPP responded to a reported erratic driver on Cranbrook Road.
Officers found the truck being pulled from a ditch on Perrie Line — minus the driver. Further investigation revealed the suspect had fled in a farm tractor.
Police say they located and stopped the tractor — about an hour after the original call at that point. But when an officer ordered the driver to come down from the machine, he refused and drove away in the slow-moving vehicle.
The officer followed the tractor and watched as the driver steered the tractor into ditch and then a field. Police say they picked up the accused a little while later after he abandoned the machine and ran on foot toward Moncrieff Road.
The detachment reports the arrest of Morris-Turnberry resident Donald Williamson, 33. He’s charged with Operation While Impaired, Flight from Peace Officer and Refusal to Comply with Demand. Williamson was released from custody to appear March 7 in Goderich court.
