There were five new cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) in Ontario in April, the most in a single month in almost four years.
The most recent cases were:
• April 3 at a farrow-to-wean farm in Perth County
• April 3 at a nursery farm in Huron County
• April 6 at a finisher farm in Perth County
• April 6 at a finisher farm in Perth County
• April 17 at a finisher farm in Huron County.
The last time there were five cases in a single month was in December, 2014.
These five cases bring the number of PEDV cases in Ontario to 112 since the disease was first found on a Western Ontario farm in 2014. There have now been 21 cases in Huron County, most among counties.
This also brings the total this year to seven cases. There were just six in all of 2017.
The disease causes watery diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration and can kill 50 to 100 per cent of young pigs.
