OTTERVILLE — A barn fire in Oxford County late last month destroyed at least 3,000 hogs and caused $3 million in damage.
The fire broke out around 9 p.m. on Eric Van Boekel’s farm on Milldale Road, near Otterville, 30 minutes south of Woodstock. The fire is not suspicious and the Ontario Fire Marshall is not investigating, said Norwich Fire Chief Paul Groeneveld.
By the time firefighters arrived, the barn was fully engaged in flames. The entire barn was destroyed, as were the 3,000 sows inside. There was an undetermined number of other hogs inside the barn at the time, Groeneveld said. The barn was insured, he said.
