TAVISTOCK — An early August hog-barn fire caused $500,000 in damages and destroyed 1,000 piglets.
The fire, which broke out on Aug. 1 at 3 p.m. on the farm on Cassel Road at southern Tavistock, in northern Oxford County, was a full-blown blaze when firefighters arrived. A neighbour saw smoke coming from the barn and called 911. Tavistock Fire Chief Scott Alexander told Farmers Forum that the flames were already through the roof when firefighters arrived.
Despite the roaring flame, firefighters managed to save 1,200 piglets.
The cause of the fire is unknown but not suspicious, Alexander said.
