NORTH DUMFRIES — A July 17 fire destroyed a barn full of hay and caused $500,000 in damage at North Dumfries, just outside Cambridge in Waterloo Region, last month.
The barn is owned by area dairy farm Follingdale Farms.
The immediate focus, Fire Chief Robert Shantz told Farmers Forum, was to cool the nearby house and protect it from the fierce blaze, as strong winds were blowing the fire right towards the house.
A total of 30 firefighters fought the fire, some remaining overnight to monitor hotspots and let the barn finish burning down.
The barn was full of hay, Shantz said. Damage was estimated to be $500,000.
