ENNISKILLEN — A farmer was fined $8,130 after a weed killer spill into the Durham Creek drain killed fish.
Charlie Zavitz of Enniskillen Township, just southeast of Sarnia, pled guilty on Oct. 14 to a violation of the Ontario Water Resources Act.
Zavitz had been driving 2,000 litres of weed killer across the drain where it flows through his property when the tractor tipped, the hitch snapped, and one of the side tanks was punctured.
He called the fire department. A temporary dam was put into the drain to keep the weed killer from getting into Bear Creek which contains rare aquatic species.
There were dead fish along over a 200-metre range from the original spill site.
