BRANTFORD — Two Quebec cows set four new national production records in their age categories in 2022.
According to Holstein Canada, the latest “Canadian Champion” milk producers are JMJ Brewmaster Fleur and Bergitte Goldwyn Hobby.
Fleur — bred and owned by Ferme J.M.J. of Saints-Anges — set records for both protein and total milk output for a five-year-old. She produced 1,045 kg of protein and 24,392 kg of milk last year.
Hobby — bred by Bertrand Boutin & Fils and owned by Ferme Bergitte in St. Georges — set records for both fat and total milk output for an 11-year old. She produced 1,509 kg of fat and 18,038 kg of milk last year.
The average Holstein cow in Canada produces just over 11,000 kg of milk annually.
New production records by age aren’t set very often. Holstein Canada’s Brad Eggink said it’s been 3 years since a production by age record was broken.
An Ontario cow holds the overall World and Canadian lifetime milk production record. Through 11 lactations, Gillette E Smurf of Embrun — now deceased—made almost 248,000 kg of milk.
