The dairy industry was the top 2016 commodity for farm cash receipts in 12 of 14 Eastern and East-Central Ontario counties and regions, according to OMAFRA and Statistics Canada. The only two exceptions were Durham Region (where floriculture and nursery was tops) and Kawartha Lakes (where calves and cattle reigned supreme). Dairy was second in both counties.
Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry had the highest farm cash receipts this side of Toronto at $422.3 million. (An inadvertent error in the May, 2018 edition of Farmers Forum referred to the county as Stormont, but should have said Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry). Prescott-Russell was second at $274.36 million.
The figures, released last month, also show that dairy was the top commodity for earnings in all of Ontario, followed by fruits and vegetables, soybeans and calves and cattle. Below are the top five Eastern Ontario counties for farm cash receipts, and their top 10 commodities.
