Record-breaking crop forecast

OTTAWA — Eastern Ontario fields are forecast to have bountiful corn and soybean yields and Ontario as a whole is looking at a record soybean yield, according to the results of Ontario’s two major crop assessment tours.
The competing efforts by Great Lakes Grain FS (GLG) and the Great Ontario Yield Tour agree that Eastern Ontario will have an exceptional year, while Great Lakes forecasts the top provincial yields for corn and soybeans will be in Eastern Ontario.
GLG’s crop assessment tour projects a record soybean yield in Ontario of 54.8 bu/ac, surpassing the previous record of 53 bu/ac set in 2024.
GLG projects a weighted provincial average corn yield of 200.4 bu/ac, just shy of the 202 bu/ac record, also set in 2024. Last year’s Ontario average corn yield was 191 bushels/acre and soybean yield of 46 bu/ac, according to crop insurer Agricorp.
Presenting the organization’s findings Sept. 15 Great Lakes’ Devin Homick highlighted the exceptional results across eastern counties. “Potentially record crops,” Homick said, “especially in the east. The east had exceptional numbers.”
According to Great Lakes, their projected top yielding counties for both corn and soybeans will be Prescott & Russell with 215.7 bu/ac corn and 55.8 bu/ac soybeans
Meanwhile, the 11th annual Great Ontario Yield Tour projection — released on Aug. 26 — projected both record corn (206 bu/ac) and soybean (55 bu/ac) yields in Ontario. The yield tour sees a solid Eastern Ontario corn yield of 200 bu/ac and a soybean yield of 58 bu/ac.
Statistics Canada’s September 2026 report reflected a similar upward trend, forecasting Ontario average corn yields of 186.2 bu/ac (up from 175.6 bu/ac in 2025) with total production estimated at 10.42 million metric tonnes.
StatCan projects provincial soybean yields of 52 bu/ac (up from 46.3 bu/ac in 2025), with total production reaching 4.04 million metric tonnes. StatCan’s model-based methodology typically yields lower overall totals than the physical field tours.
