RED DEER, ALBERTA — Canada’s largest farm supply and retail chain, Peavey Mart, is closing its doors in all Canadian locations.
Peavey Mart’s CEO Doug Anderson announced in late January that the company has decided to file for creditor protection to avoid bankruptcy. As a result, all 90 stores in Canada, including 9 stores in Eastern Ontario and 19 in Western Ontario, will be closing, with liquidation sales set to begin immediately. Eastern Ontario locations include Arnprior, Belleville, Brockville, Cornwall, Smiths Falls, Kemptville, Kingston, Pembroke and Rockland.
“The Canadian retail industry is experiencing unprecedented challenges, including record-low consumer confidence, inflationary pressures, rising operating costs, and ongoing supply disruptions along with a difficult regulatory environment,” said a Peavey Industries press release. “These factors have created significant obstacles for businesses like Peavey.”
Peavey Mart’s 60 year legacy saw many loyal customers like a disappointed Travis McDougall, of Kitchener. “We’re going to be looking for a lot of stuff online and these brick and mortar stores are disappearing pretty quickly because of online shopping,” McDougall told CTV.
Peavey Mart started in Winnipeg in 1967 as National Farmway Stores and changed its name to Peavey Mart in 1974. Peavey expanded rapidly, acquiring the line of TSC stores in 2016 and doubling its stores across Canada.
Peavey Mart will continue to operate its 107 Ace Hardware stores.
