A new Michigan plant could help pork producers in Ontario.
Clemens Food Group is building a new plant capable of processing 10,000-plus hogs a day in Coldwater.
Director of business development Dan Groff told the Nov. 16 meeting of the Ontario Pork Industry Council that the plant will be up and running in June 2017.
Jim Long, president and CEO of Genesus Inc. — a swine genetics company — says Ontario producers are challenged to get their hogs marketed, especially since Quality Meat Packers filed for creditor protection in 2014 and had to shut down.
“It is expected that U.S. Country of Origin Labelling will disappear sometime in the near future and that will make many, if not all, U.S. plants keener to acquire Canadian market hogs,” he said.
