TORONTO Moore Orchards is the apple of the eye for judges, as the Cobourg farm has once again taken home the trophy for premier exhibitor of commercial varieties at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair last month. Moore Orchards owned by Patrick and Heidi Behan has won the award five of the seven years since the Royal brought apples back as a competition in 2008. Its quite common to see the apple orchard finish in the top five in many categories at the Royal. Besides the premium exhibitor trophy, the orchard came first in the categories of Gala, Cortland, Champion and Reserve for class 11, and Snow; second in Spartan, Russett, Other, Champion and Reserve for class 4, and Honeycrisp; third for McIntosh, Crispin and heaviest apple; fourth for Red Delicious and most unusual shaped apple; and fifth for Empire and Northern Spy.
