Licensed meat plant operator fined for failing to comply with an order
TORONTO — On June 6, 2024, Frank Hamm, operator of Springwater Meats, Alymer, appeared before Justice Gordon Chaput and pled guilty to the charge of failing to comply with an order under the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2001 contrary to section 32 (7). He was fined $5,000, plus victim surcharge fees for violating a compliance order.
The date of the offence was August 28, 2023.
Springwater Meats, operated by Frank Hamm, conducted business as a provincially licenced freestanding meat plant. During the months of June, July and August 2023, environmental swabs, taken by ministry staff as part of their regular duties, tested positive for Listeria. On August 24, 2023, the ministry ordered Springwater Meats to cease production of all ready-to-eat meat products until modifications to remove the risk to human health were completed at the plant.
On August 28, 2023, ministry inspectors discovered ready-to-eat meat products had been manufactured in violation of the order. A ministry investigator subsequently laid charges against Hamm for violating the compliance order.
