OTTAWA — Is the Trudeau government trying to “cancel” juicy burgers?
The Beef Farmers of Ontario are sounding the alarm over a Health Canada proposal to label ground beef and ground pork as “high in saturated fats” on the front of the packaging. No other raw food would be singled out for labelling.
And yet Canadian-farmed hamburger has been singled out for vilification, according to the Beef Farmers of Ontario, which has launched a letter-writing campaign.
The BFO argues that “ground beef is a nutrient-dense protein that pro – vides critical iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and other essential nutrients deficient in many Canadian diets,” while at the same time, a reduction in Canadian beef consumption would have only a marginal impact on saturated fat intake.
