OTTAWA — A federal bill that would have made the labelling of genetically-modified food mandatory was defeated soundly in Parliament in May.
Bill C-291 was introduced by Quebec NDP MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault, back in 2014. The final vote on the bill took place on May 17, where it was defeated 216-67.
The United States, on the other hand, has only one year to figure out the labelling framework for their mandatory GM labelling, which was signed into law by then-president Barack Obama in 2016.
