NORTH LANCASTER — The cause of a barn fire that killed 60 dairy cattle near North Lancaster is still under investigation.
Firefighters from all five South Glengarry fire departments were called around 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 31. When they arrived at Josef Hagen’s farm on County Road 18, the barn was completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters managed to rescue 40 cows from the building and say another 60 perished before their arrival. Neighbours came to help care for the rescued cows, said South Glengarry Fire Chief Dave Robertson.
The fire was under control around 1 a.m. No one was injured but the building was a complete loss, said Chief Robertson.
