STITTSVILLE — The Landowner magazine will be shutting down after 13 years.
The magazine was launched in 2006 by Farmers Forum editor Patrick Meagher when the Lanark Landowners’ Association emerged from the grassroots of the Lanark Highlands. He sold the magazine to a small group of passionate Ontario Landowner Association members but the heart and soul were always Tom Black and his wife, Marlene. While Tom worked long hours on the phone as the president of the Ontario Landowners Association, until stepping down last year, Marlene ran the magazine as editor, writer, subscriptions manager, bookkeeper and paginator. She loved the work and will continue the magazine as an online publication for the next year.
The magazine is best known for its dogged reporting on the overreach of the Ontario Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The May/June print issue was its last.
Black said that they decided to stop printing the magazine because printing and mailing costs kept going up but subscriptions were going down. They have about 1,600 subscribers.
