INDIAN RIVER — A half interest in a two-year-old beef heifer sold for $17,000 at the Elmlodge Polled Herefords’ Source for Success XVI.
Stonewood Rose 5C was sold to River Road Farms in Quebec on Sept. 16. The heifer comes from a prestigious family: One sister won many shows and mothered the intermediate champion female at the 2016 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, while another sister was champion at Expo Bouef in Quebec in 2016. Stonerose looks to be continuing the family success as she was named champion female at the Peterborough Exhibition Show this past August.
Elmlodge Herefords owner Billy Elmhirst, said there were about 40-50 people at the farm for the sale — he attributed the turnout to the excellent sunny weather — and another 500 followed online.
“This year was probably one of our best crowds,” he said, adding there were a lot of new breeders at the show, a good sign for the future of the beef industry.
“We always invite them to the sale with a special invitation,” he said. “We sent 41 emails to new breeders just in Ontario.”
Animals were sold to eight provinces and several U.S. states. The 75 animals sold on average for about $5,200 each.
