OTTAWA — The annual Eastern Ontario Dairy Days conference is set to churn up some interesting discussion in February. Lessons from the avian flu outbreak on American dairy farms and an ongoing effort to generate saleable methane from Ontario cow manure are among the topics on the agenda.
The yearly conference began 49 years ago as several regional gatherings of Eastern Ontario dairy farmers, which was eventually pared down to two locations on consecutive dates.
The 2025 edition returns to the St. Isidore Recreation Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 12 and the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville on Thursday, Feb. 13. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at each site (no advance registration). A fee of $30 per person applies, which also covers a catered lunch. It’s all over at 3:30 p.m.
Both dates feature the same speakers, including Theresa Sweeney-Murphy, senior communications director for the National Milk Producers Federation in the U.S. She will address the bird flu situation on dairy farms south of the border. Green Energy Trading Corp. president Nick Thurler and CEO Shikha Jain will update the group on plans to harvest methane from manure collected at participating Ontario dairy farms.
Other presentations will explore troubleshooting farm bacteria problems and getting the most value out of dairy-beef calves.
A trade show with about 20 exhibitors will complement the conference.
The event typically draws between 100 to 120 producers to each scheduled date.
