The vast majority of people killed on provincial highways last year had their lives cut short because of poor and careless decisions and actions behind the wheel and in passenger seats.
There were 344 fatal collisions in 2024, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The most common factor in these fatalities was speed.
95 fatalities were attributed to speed
80 fatalities attributed to an inattentive drive
60 deaths involved a driver or passenger not wearing a seatbelt
53 fatalities linked to alchol/ or drug use.
Last year also marked the highest number of motorcycle fatalities on OPP-controlled roads in 20 years. In 2024, 57 motorcyclists were killed.
In 18 cases the motorcyclists were not the at-fault driver.
By mid-May this year, the OPP have responded to 86 fatal road collisions that resulted in 99 people killed.
