INKERMAN — The silent yield robber, compaction, can be a problem in any year, but this year’s mud-it-or-leave-it planting season means farmers will be paying for compacted soil come harvest time.
So its perhaps timely that the Ontario soil compaction team, a group of OMAFRA and industry compaction specialists, is putting on an information day for farmers to help them mitigate compaction through this season and in future seasons.
The Aug. 29 event at 11760 Guy Road, Inkerman, will feature a live compaction demonstration, where machines with different types of tires will run over probes to show how equipment type and tire shape and size can affect compaction.
There will also be three info sessions: How cover crops can mitigate compaction; how soil structure can effect compaction; and how vulnerable different soil types in Eastern Ontario are to compaction.
Advance tickets cost $100. Student tickets are $65, and walk-ins are $125. Pre-register online at oscia.wildapricot.org/Events by Aug. 23, or call 613-258-8295 for more information.
