Statistics Canada reports that Canadian farms continue to grow larger in terms of sales and number of employees, while smaller and mid-sized farms are on the decline.
The recently released 2021 Census of Agriculture found a continuing trend of farm consolidation and a larger proportion of farms consequently hitting annual sales of $1 million or more in 2020. 9.9% of farms hit that benchmark in 2020, up from 7.2% from 2015.
Farms in the top sales classes also account for the largest share of total farm operating revenues and a larger share of total farm employees, according to StatCan. In 2021, farms with sales of at least $2 million accounted for 51.5% of total farm operating revenues in Canada — up from 41.5% in 2016.
