The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association wants extra time to examine the new livestock transportation regulations due to kick in next February.
What’s the beef? The new regulations drop the amount of time cattle can spend on a truck without a break from 48 hours to 36.
Animals, particularly calves, often come from Western Canada to Ontario. But in some cases it’s logistically impossible to make the trip in 36 hours, and there aren’t any off-load sites, according to CCA co-chair Reg Schellenberg.
The CCA wants two more years to do some research and see if the time reduction and increased off-loading actually benefit the animals or not.
