OTTAWA — Two teenagers in a sedan suffered life-threatening injuries when they collided with a farm tractor on June 6 at about 6 p.m. in rural Ottawa.
The tractor was towing tandem disc implements and one eyewitness claims to have seen the car slam into the disc implement.
One teenager was thrown from the vehicle, while the other was trapped inside the heavily damaged car that wound up nose-first in the ditch on Brophy Drive at Twin Elm Road, between Richmond and Manotick, south of urban Ottawa. Multiple bystanders were at the scene assisting the injured when Ottawa firefighters arrived to extricate the trapped teen, who was taken out of the car on a backboard.
“We did not post pictures due to the severity of the accident,” Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio told Farmers Forum.
One month after the collision, the Ottawa Police Service reported that one of the teens had recovered enough to be released from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The other remained in critical condition.
“Critical condition” typically indicates that the person’s injuries or health status pose a significant risk of death or severe long-term impairment without urgent treatment. This could involve severe trauma (e.g., from a car accident, shooting, or fall) or major organ failure.
The tractor operator was uninjured. A person claiming to have seen the wreck posted on social media that the car appeared to have slammed into the back of the implement.
Federal government data shows that slow-moving vehicles are 3.8 to 4.8 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision per kilometre on the road than other motor vehicles.
