UNITED KINGDOM — Residents of the United Kingdom must slash their intake of meat and dairy products by up to 50 per cent to achieve the country’s climate-control goals by 2050, according to an official proposal under consideration by Britain’s new socialist Labour government.
The top-down remake of British diets was contained in recommendations by the UK’s climate change committee to the country’s new energy secretary and ‘net zero’ minister Ed Miliband, who recently sought the committee’s guidance on achieving climate targets.
Committee chairman Piers Forster did not stipulate how British consumers might be persuaded to eat less meat in favour of plant-based alternatives, according to The Telegraph. But the UK-based newspaper reported that options could include new taxes on meat products, reduced subsidies to livestock farmers, and a regulatory clampdown on meat advertising. The committee has also called on British lawmakers to cut livestock numbers.
The Labour government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has doubled down on a climate-control agenda since taking power in July. The UK’s previous Conservative government generally pursued the same agenda before voters turfed the party in July.
