HALDIMAND COUNTY The OPP is on the lookout for a thief with sticky soybean fingers. Police say someone harvested and stole 40 acres of soybeans on Nov. 4 from a field on Rainham Road in Haldimand County. The beans were worth about $25,000. The farmer leased the land from the Ontario government, and went to check on his crop last October. Thats when he found the field already harvested. The farmer called the police a few days later. OPP Const. Mark Foster told the Hamilton Spectator that hes not ruling out this could all be a mistake. Foster said farmers sometimes hire crews that end up harvesting the wrong field. He also said its rare for a crop like soybeans or corn to be stolen like this, as a crop such as tobacco or ginseng is much more profitable. Depending on the combine, it would take about five hours to harvest the 40 acres of beans, which would fill one farm trailer bin. Anyone with information can call police at 1-888-310-1122.
