
These were peaceful days. In this year, Canada’s best known novel, Anne of Green Gables, was first published. Wilfrid Laurier was enjoying his third of four terms as prime minister, and the population was largely rural. Horse and wagon and the bicycle were the popular modes of transportation.
Ontario life had its many daily hardships but there was also much more leisure time. At birth, life expectancy was age 50.
Canada’s population was about 6.6 million. Life expectancy today is 82 and the population is 38 million.
