Insured producers with vomitoxin (DON) levels higher than 5 parts per million in their corn can apply for Agricorp’s salvage benefit up to their guaranteed production.
Over 3,000 damage reports have been filed because of vomitoxin infection, although not every report means the farmer lost money due to DON. Producers file a damage claim when they suspect damage.
As of Feb. 6, 2019, Agricorp has paid $25.5 million in production and salvage claims to corn producers and there are more payments to come.
As of the same date, 24,500 acres of corn in Ontario had high enough DON levels that producers got the go ahead to destroy it. A little over half, 15,500 acres, was already destroyed. That’s less than one per cent of the corn acreage that Agricorp insures.
Over 14,000 Ontario corn producers are insured through Agricorp.
