PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY — A man is accused of stealing money from several unmanned roadside produce stands in Prince Edward County.
Such stands operate on the honour system.
Prince Edward County OPP launched an investigation Aug. 23 after one farmer called to complain of missing cash. “And that led to other places that may have been robbed as well. So we contacted those people, and they indicated it had actually happened there as well,” said Const. Richard Martin.
Several roadside stands were involved, Martin said, with the cash box either removed completely or pried open. The officer did not know what type of produce was being sold at the involved sites.
Police report the arrest of Picton resident Andrew Frost, 43, on two counts of theft under $5,000. Frost was released to appear Sept. 29 at Prince Edward County court.
Martin advised that farmers should keep cash to a minimum at their roadside stands and securely fasten the cash box to the site.
