Id like to ask Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne why my son should choose to set up his business in Ontario.
He graduated in December from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth with a degree in business; specifically entrepreneurial business, a program designed to train future business creators and employers.
Obviously, my family would love to have him close by. But the Ontario Liberals have used their decade-plus in power to put more roadblocks in his way than one would have thought possible.
Auditor general Bonnie Lysyk recently pointed out that Ontarios debt has exploded under the Liberals and is set to reach $325 billion by 2017-18. “To put this in perspective,” she said, “to eliminate Ontarios 2017-18 estimated net debt, every man, woman and child in Ontario would need to contribute $23,000 to the provincial coffers.”
But it is worse than that for beleaguered taxpayers, as children and many men and women do not pay taxes. The obligation to generate money to pay that massive debt, which has doubled under the Liberal government, will fall to the approximately seven million employed, taxpaying, people in Ontario.
That almost doubles the obligation on anyone earning a living.
Additionally, each year the average worker is paying about $1,400 on our more than $10 billion worth of interest payments on debt. There is no indication the Liberals plan to do anything other than make it worse.
With their majority government, achieved in part by giving away the store to the public sector unions, the Liberals show no indication they are willing to give up on their Green Energy Act, which drove up the price of power. In fact, they have plans to set up even more costly and inefficient wind turbine farms.
For example, QMI reported, “Ontarios environmental review panel has given the go-ahead for the Grand Bend Wind Farm, a 40-turbine, $380-million project hugging the Lake Huron Shoreline.”
More projects are planned even though, “Steve McAuley, chief administrative officer of Bluewater Municipality, told QMI Agency the municipal council has repeatedly informed the Ontario government it doesnt want wind farms.”
But Wynne and her government apparently couldnt care less what ordinary people want. The list of Liberal spending scandals, such as the cancelled gas plants, deleted emails, Ornge, etc., is well known to the public, but not taken seriously by one of the most inept and uncaring governments I have ever seen. And I have lived in multiple provinces and a number of U.S. states.
Ontario recently had its credit rating downgraded and the Liberals are under two police investigations.
New regulations to take effect in 2015 attack small businesses by telling responsible adults who own restaurants and bars they cant allow their adult customers to smoke on an outdoor patio, showing no respect for individual choice or investment.
Adding to high energy prices, there is the government-raised minimum wage, plus a new provincial pension plan, which will force many employees and employers to pay into a pool the fabulous money managers of the Ontario government will administer. How is that a welcoming environment for prospective employers? How much more difficult do we want to make it for employers and employees?
People and companies looking to build their and our future, might look more favourably on Alberta, Saskatchewan or Texas.
My children and yours have a future. But is it in Ontario?
